Monday is the one day each week that I have precious one-on-one time with Aleyah. On Mondays, she gets to do all the things she cannot do when McKinley is with us: PlayDoh, Kinetic Sand, Roller Coaster, board games and movies, just to name a few. This past Monday, Aleyah and I (along with our special friends, Susan and Ronnie Schultz) were FINALLY able to see Inside Out — the latest Disney Pixar movie.
Inside Out is about a young girl named Riley who is uprooted from her Midwest life and moved to San Francisco. Riley’s emotions (Joy, Fear, Anger, Disgust and Sadness) conflict on how best to navigate a new city, house and school. When I first saw this advertised months ago, I thought this looked like it might be a great movie for Aleyah as she is 3 and seems to have a hard time articulating to me the emotions she is feeling at times. I tried to research a bit on the net about the appropriateness of the movie for a 3 year old but I was unable to find anything concrete so I just took a chance.
Here we are waiting for the movie to start.
Aleyah was very excited about seeing the movie as we have seen it advertised again and again. She got even more excited when Susan and Ronnie showed up to watch it with us. I stopped by the concession stand to get her some Sour Patch Kids and a small Sprite. She said she had eaten the Sour Patch Kids before, but I could tell by the hilarious look on her face when she bit into the first one that she had not. Thank goodness, Susan knew that if she put it in her mouth, the sour would quickly go away and only sweet would remain lol.
Once the movie started, I looked over at her a few times. She was totally into it, although I was sure that some of the content included subject matter that she could not possibly understand. Still, she watched it all the way through to its entirety and, after the movie was over, I asked her some questions. The conversation went like this:
Mimi: What was the movie about?
Aleyah: It was about sadness; it was a good movie.
Mimi: Who was your favorite character?
Aleyah: Umm, Sadness.
Mimi: Why was Sadness your favorite?
Aleyah: I just like her better.
Mimi: Are you sad right now?
Mimi: What do you think you are: Joy, Sadness, Fear, Disgust, Anger or something else?
Alayah: I’m Poopie Butt! Hahaha
Mimi: Did you like Riley?
Aleyah: At school she cried because of her teacher.
Mimi: Remember when Disgust made Riley spit out her brocolli?
Aleyah: Haha yes!
Mimi: What food do you think is disgusting?
Mimi: What else?
Aleyah: (thoughtfully) corn and peas
Mimi: What foods are your favorites? Tell me all of them.
Aleyah: Spaghetti & Meatballs, cheese sticks, hotdogs, strawberries, and yogurt
Mimi: Remember Fear and all the stuff he was afraid of?
Mimi: What are you afraid of?
Aleyah: Umm, nothing.
Mimi: What is your favorite Disney movie?
Aleyah: Inside Out
Mimi: Really, you liked this movie more than Nemo, Tangled, Brave, Frozen, Beauty and the Beast, and Ratatouille?
A little while later, we were having some downtime and she asked if she could watch Ratatouille. I put it on and then I repeated my previous question, ‘What is your favorite Disney movie,’ to which she replied “First, Ratatouille, then Frozen, then Inside Out.” What a difference 30 minutes makes in the mind of a 3 year old. I just love that girl so much!!!
Thanks for joining me today. I hope your day will be filled with joy, and free from anger, disgust, fear, and sadness. I also hope you have a little dose of Poopie Butt in your day!
